- Once I become a 4th semester sophomore and have declared my concentration, do I still need a PIN to preregister for courses?
- In general, courses numbered at the 1000- level and up, are "advanced", meaning that they have some intro and intermediate level prereqs. Also, they are more focused in the discipline, and may deal with primary literature. The fact that they are advanced does not necessarily mean they are lots HARDER than some intermediate level courses, only that they are more focused on a subtopic of the discipline. MANY intermediate level courses are plenty challenging (eg, Genetics (BIOL 0470) and Biochem (BIOL 0280), for examples!). Intermediate level courses are number below "1000."In general, courses numbered at the 1000-level and up, are "advanced", meaning that they have some intro and intermediate level prereqs. MANY intermediate level courses are plenty challenging (eg, Genetics (BIOL 0470) and Biochem (BIOL 0280), for examples!. Intermediate level courses are number below "1000." Intro level courses are described as the entry level course required for concentrators. (e.g Physics 0300, 0400 or Chem 0330, or BIOL 0200). There may be several of these, such as the BIOL 0190 courses, for examples. Intro level courses would be unlikely to have college level prerequisites. However, there may be courses numbered *below* these numerically, that are *still* for concentration credit. Examples of this in Biology are BIOL 0170, 0180, for examples. In biology, courses numbered below 0010 are not for biology concentration credit, eg, BIOL 0030 (nutrition), which is designed for more general audiences. However, even BIOL 0200 is taken by many non-concentrators, cuz… it is good! For other disciplines, similar numerology applies. NEXT: in Biology the number is the "tens place signify an area of biology. So, ones with 5 (BIOL 0530, 1520, 1550... all concern immunology /microbio; ones with 8 generally concern physiology or anatomy (0800,1880,1800); ones with 2, biochemistry (0280, 1270). This is not the strictest of rules, but the point is that the higher numbers (like 0470) is not "more advanced" than say, BIOL 0280. Finally, there are 2000-level courses, which means they are graduate level...but often advanced undergrads can take these, too!
- TWO PART QUESTION: 1) In the Biology concentration programs, can BIOL1950/1960 (research for 2 semesters) count as ONE lab course, and as one 1000-level course, at the same time? 2) Can other stipulations overlap? For example can the same BIOL course be "area 1" and a lab credit?
