Research Summary

The roles of brain insulin deficiency and insulin resistance in neurodegeneration. Three diseases of major interest to us are: Alzheimer's, alcoholic neurodegeneration, and fetal alcohol syndrome

Past or Present Projects Available:

Chronic ethanol exposure causes nitrochondrial dysfunction and oxidative stress in immature central nervous system neurons; Link between diabetes and Alzheimer's disease; The role of the poliovirus receptor and SOD-1 in the pathogenesis of sporadic ALS; Analyze processing of human AAH protein to determine if degredation/turnover are regulated by proteolytic cleavage; Ethanol impaired liver regeneration and its effects on aspartyl-asparagyl beta hydroxylese expression; Role of dietary soy in preventing alcoholic brain disease; Viral etiology and molecular profile of human astrocytomas; Analysis of cytokine levels and their effects in the progression of Alzheimer's disease; Combating insulin resistance and neurodegeneration with soy protein; The protective effects of dietary soy in fetal alcohol spectrum disorders; Viral etiology of human brain tumors; Indices of brain insulin resistance and oxidative stress: potential non-invasive biomarkers of neurodegeneration
