Congratulations! All of us are so proud of you!!

Dear Graduating Seniors in the Biology Program (special nod to Parisa Thepmankorn, my super smart and dedicated mentee),
One of the things I missed the most about being young is this constant sensation of endless possibilities. That we can (and will) do so many great things. I used to love this mix of anxiety and excitement when a new phase of my life would start. And this is how you should see the time ahead of you. I know it is scary, but my father used to say that difficult times bring opportunities to transform and grow, personally, professionally, and economically. So, embrace the future as the chance your generation has to change the world, hopefully to a more equitable, peaceful, and happier place.

We need you now more than ever! Congratulations!

Special thanks to Simon and Rushil for all their hard work in the Bennett lab over the last few years. It was great to have both of you working in our lab and best of luck for the future! And Simon can't get enough of us because he is coming back to do a Masters - so we must be doing something right!

Congratulations to you, class of 2020! We certainly find ourselves in an extraordinary time and your AB and ScB degrees in the Biological Sciences are critical, perhaps now more than ever. We are counting on you to make a difference in the world! I hope that as you reflect on your time at Brown that you’ll remember how you’ve grown and learned since you arrived in the fall of 2016. It’s been an honor to be a part of your journey, and I wish you all the best success for the future.

Kimberly Mowry, Chair Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology & Biochemistry

Congrats! In a time of temerity and chaos, you still thrived.

Class of 2020,

I have learned in one semester, two months actually, the soul of the class of 2020. I have learned that 2020 is not defined by a virus, but by resilience in dealing with change and adversity. In this strange, unsettled time, you transformed the teaching/learning/research environment of our institution, and of our globe. You adapted to and crafted new approaches so that we did not *transition* to remote learning. No, we *added* creative new ways to interact, to engage, to discuss, and to make informed decisions. I am excited to continue to use these lessons of yours in the years to come. Thank you also for teaching me this semester about the biology of reproduction, and how diet, environment, and social dynamics affects the cell and molecular biology of reproduction of all organisms. And how to screen share on Zoom.

I so look forward to celebrating your graduation next May and just think of the story you will have to share with other alumni years! Their stories are always about the weather – how their year was hot, was rainy, was beautiful, was blurry...sigh. Your story’ve got this one!

Please be well! Come back early and often! We are proud of you.

Gary M. Wessel, Ph.D. Professor of Biology

Dear Alexander Zhao and Haley Barthel,

This graduation ceremony is far from traditional, although your accomplishments, friendships, Alma mater and community remains the same. I am very proud of all your achievements, hardwork, success and your service to the community. My only piece of advice is that you remain grounded in your roots and values and continue serving others. Build trust with honesty, respect and sincerity and stay away from negativity. Rejoice lives peaks and valleys with confidence and cheer. Believe that nothing lasts long including the pandemic. Exciting journeys are awaiting you. Thank you for contributing to my lab.

Best regards,

Not the type of finish you were hoping for but a great accomplishment all the same. I'm going to miss having you in the lab. You have been a huge help to us all but I especially enjoyed your ability to be calm under stress.
Good luck and best wishes.
