Maximilian Y. Lenail

March 26, 1999 - January 29, 2021

Max LenailMax Lenail was very proud to be a Brown University student. He was active in the Brown rock-climbing community. He lived in a pod of Brown University students in Bend OR in 2020, and in San Diego in early 2021. They were his best friends.

Max had taken a heavy curriculum of biology concentration courses, with a track focus in neurobiology. He worked for several Stanford Medicine labs over the past summers (Genetics, Psychiatry, Neurology) and at the neuroscience startup Inscopix. Max had started studying for the MCAT.

Max loved his time as a student at Brown. He found the quality of his Brown education to be superb. He was truly inspired by his professors and was in awe about how many of them had written the seminal textbooks on his fields of study. He loved the fact that he could sample a wide variety of classes before choosing his final schedule.Max Lenail

Max made such dear friends at Brown: in classes, in small groups, and at the climbing gym. Brown was the perfect place for Max to advance his deep interest and knowledge in biology and medicine.

Max was a model of "clean living" and enjoyed his family & his good friends, the mountains, and fitness above all else. He loved his dog Hazel (whom he had picked from the litter in 2012) and took her on long runs and hikes with him. Words that immediately come to mind when thinking of Max: kindness, patience, altruism, optimism, health, athleticism, nature, and healing.

Max LenailMax is terribly missed by the many who admired and loved him. But as the Ancient Egyptians said: "You are not dead until your name is spoken for the last time." We will keep Max's name and spirit alive at Brown and elsewhere.

Max died in an accident on a popular trail called the San Diego River Crossing Trail. His parents have started a campaign to build a memorial pedestrian bridge at that location and are asking for support. Details can be found at www.BridgeForMax.com.
